Ramadan Traditions

India is such a diversified country when it comes to religion. Each religion has its own festivals and thereby different customs and traditions to follow it. Muslims fast for one month called the Ramadan month in their own traditional ways.

During the ninth month of the Muslim calendar when the full moon appears, Ramadan fast begins.

Basic Ramadan Tradition

Ramadan the month of fast for Muslims is the time period when Muslims part themselves from water, food and smoking during the daylight. During Ramadan Muslims have food twice a day, one when sun rises and the other when sun sets. The meal had before the sunrise is called suhoor and the meal had after the sunset is called Iftar. During the Ramadan fast, for Iftar meal delicious food is cooked like:

Fig and lemon chicken
Nutritional lentil soup
Moroccan soup
Beef meatballs
Tomato sauce
Fresh fig cake
Rich semolina cookies


According to Islam, Ramadan is a way of showing devotion to god. Ramadan is the time when Muslims devote their soul to god by praying. According to Islam Ramadan is the only way when a human in this busy life can remember god despite of the daily busy schedules. The Ramadan days begin with the prayers and end with the prayers. Muslims also visit mosque during the Ramadan month for their prayers.



After Ramadan

When the Ramadan month is over the celebrations occur for three days Eid –ul-fitr. This day all the Muslims greet each other saying Eid Mubarak, Spreading love and feeling of happiness all around. On this day all the relatives and friends gather to celebrate Eid-ul fitr. Muslims get new clothes before hand to wear on Eid.Gifts and cash money called Eidi is given to children as a token of love by their parents and relatives. All the relatives have food together which is very delicious. Some of the common food items mad on Eid are:

Mrouziya
Tabuli
Biryani
Mutton korma
Saiwiyan
