Ramadan the holy month of fasting for Muslims and month to say no to food, drink, smoking, sexual activities and all the things which are which are considered to be a sin in the eyes of Allah.Ramadan is said to be the Allah's own month as it is believed that during Ramadan the holy book Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. During Ramadan Muslims read entire Quran and remember Allah. It is also believed that during Ramadan month the gates of heaven (jannah) are open and the gates of hell (Jahanam) are closed. For the entire month of Ramadan Muslims dedicate themselves in praying to Allah by reciting Ramadan dua as many times and visiting mosque.
How is Ramadan Decided?
Ramadan starts with the sighting of the crescent moon (hilal) and last for a period of one month. When the hilal is visible again at the end of the month, it is the time to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr (break the fast). |

Ramadan Routine
Ramadan is the ninth month of Islamic calendar and Muslims follow Islamic calendar, which is generally 13 days shorter than the solar calendar .so whether the Ramadan dates of the year 2007 will be similar to the dates of the year 2006 no one can say. When will the month of Ramadan will start can only be decided when the crescent moon (hilal) is visible. The Sighting of the hilal marks the beginning of the Ramadan. If hilal is seen at night then the next day is the first day of Ramadan and fasting. On the similar lines when the hilal is visible again at the end of the month, it is the time to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr (break the fast). Ramadan continues for 29 to 30 days. The estimated dates of the Ramadan for the next years are given below:
- Ramadan 2007: 12/13 September to 12 October.
- Ramadan 2008: 1/2 September to 1 October.
- Ramadan 2009: 21/22 august to 20 September.
- Ramadan 2010: 10/11 august to 9 September.
Hence the above estimated Ramadan dates for the next years show that every year Ramadan starts 11 to 12 earlier than the previous year
Lailatul Qadr:
The 27th day Ramadan month is said to be the Lailatul Qadr also called the night of power. On this day Muslims spend entire night praying to Allah. The estimated dates of Lailatul Qadr for the next years is given below:
- Lailatul Qadr 2007: 8/9 October.
- Lailatul Qadr 2008: 27/28 September.
- Lailatul Qadr 2009: 16/17 September.
- Lailatul Qadr 2010: 5/6 September.

Eid-Ul-Fitr:
Soon after the Ramadan month the next day is celebrated as the Eid-ul-Fitr day. It is the time for celebrations for the Muslims, when they buy new clothes specially men wearing white color symbol of peace and prosperity. On this day Muslims visit mosque early in the morning and a get together is there at their home of all their near and dear ones. The entire family has delicious Ramadan food together. Children enjoy Eid the most as they get a lot of sweets and gifts from their family members. Muslims greet each other by saying Eid Mubarak!
